Can a Movie Change the Law?
Просмотров 173 тыс.Месяц назад
The 1961 film VICTIM isn't just a tense thriller. It was crafted to serve as a stealthy challenge to a British law that criminalized the very existence of homosexuals. It was a law that many had tried - and failed - to overturn. But at the dawn of the swinging sixties, a new challenge emerged. VICTIM brought together an unlikely team of writers, producers, and a matinee idol named Dirk Bogarde ...

Transforming a Gay Truck Driver into the Biggest Star in Hollywood: Rock Hudson's Rise & Fall
Просмотров 570 тыс.5 месяцев назад
In the middle of the 1950s, America fell in love with Rock Hudson. Ranked the #1 box office draw in the country, Rock was an American ideal of masculinity - strong, confident, and above all, romantic. But the figure that America worshiped as the perfect man was really a façade propped up by years of scheming and betrayals. It was a secret that stayed hidden in plain sight for years… until a cri...

And while Norman the character was known for his dark secrets, actor Tony Perkins carried secrets of his own from ...
Behind the Scenes of SOME LIKE IT HOT: Secrets, Scandals, and Marilyn's Mystique
Просмотров 533 тыс.8 месяцев назад
The American Film Institute called Some Like it Hot the greatest film comedy ever made. It's a tale of two musicians on the run from the mob, hiding out in an all-girl band ... and when it first hit theaters, audiences weren't ready. Coming at the tail end of the conservative 1950s, the movie made a mockery of uptight American attitudes about sex. But even more shocking than the movie's premise...

All in the Family is one of the most controversial shows ever broadcast. It featured a typical American family, arguing over topics that most other shows didn’t dare go near, and shocked America as well as the network executives who tried to do everything they could to stop it. But while Archie, Edith, Mike, and Gloria were busy making TV history, behind-the-scenes feuds threatened to tear the ...

I heard this line said a lot on the WWF/E and thought it came from there because I didn't watch Seinfeld until recently. Any time a wrestler would do something a little queer, a commentator would mention something about it and then they would say "Not that there's anything wrong with that".

Whenever leadership looks to divert attention from failed policies or corruption, or anything that could be seen in a bad light, a scapegoat is needed to rile up the public. Same thing in Jim Crow Era, where rich white property owners set the poor whites and blacks against each other, about how black men were gonna steal your jobs and women. Here its how gay men were gonna corrupt your children and possibly infect even you! Anytime a group is singled out, be sure to check behind the curtain. When I think of my gay ancestors, my heart breaks for what they went through, and I realize any comfort I have now is because they suffered. Its very hard the keep the hate and bitterness tamped down.

I guess I prove your point because I’m straight as they come, and I never would’ve considered any of these characters “beloved “. They are all odious caricatures, to me. So perhaps you are onto something. here.

I hate the way MAGA is trying to reverse all of our gains and I hope the truth tellers, like you, prevail. Good luck in all your future endeavors. I very much look forward to seeing them. When this show just came out, I went to IMDB to read the reviews. Like always people would put a lot of time and effort in writing down their opinion. A few weeks back, I went there to find out when the second season is going to start. Found a lot more new reviews, but most of them were incredibly tedious and infuriating ... the same LGBTQ+ conspiracy bs. People are constantly b*tching about how there is nothing really good and innovative out there to watch, but then something truly brilliant like this show is coming along and they are trying to tear it down. We all are so lucky that more and more studios and producers are willing to invest in such risky projects. The reason why so many people disliked the 1994 movie is, because it depicted some of Hollywood's finest as GAY vampires ... that movie is a f*cking masterpiece, the special effects, the requisites, the acting - top notch, it deserved way more recognition. IMDB and so many others aren't just websites for fans by fans anymore, people care increasingly about the score on those pages ... that's why fans like us need to engage more actively (social media!) to help these kind of projects to succeed.

I think the big problem is in 1993 so many straights caught absolutely none of the subtext so it would not be "coming out of the closet" but "there was a closet?" You would have to telegraph this much more and even then it It's just not the same as an interracial relationship which everyone understood as a subtext. Kirk is a man, Uhura is a woman, do the math. Everyone expected it even if some were churlish about it happening. But Garek/Bashir was still flying under their gaydar.

I just watched the Netflix series Hollywood and it's like supposed to be (partially) about Rock Hudson, but they really mangle it. They have him come out at the Oscars in 1948 with his boyfriend. Idk, it just made me mad I guess because there's already a powerful story to tell in Rock Hudson's life without pretending it was safe to be gay basically anywhere in 1948, let alone Hollywood.
