Hi there, I'm Matt. I make videos about pop culture history from a queer perspective, exploring behind-the-scenes stories about movies and TV shows that changed the world, and the fascinating people who made them.
The Rowdy Queer Rebels Who Turned Television Gay
In the 1970s, a gang of rowdy queer rebels infiltrated TV stations and wreaked havoc on broadcasts. But their targets weren't random -- they were chosen with laser precision. So what was their goal, and did they succeed? This is their story.

Can a Movie Change the Law?
Просмотров 173 тыс.Месяц назад
The 1961 film VICTIM isn't just a tense thriller. It was crafted to serve as a stealthy challenge to a British law that criminalized the very existence of homosexuals. It was a law that many had tried - and failed - to overturn. But at the dawn of the swinging sixties, a new challenge emerged. VICTIM brought together an unlikely team of writers, producers, and a matinee idol named Dirk Bogarde ...

Transforming a Gay Truck Driver into the Biggest Star in Hollywood: Rock Hudson's Rise & Fall
Просмотров 570 тыс.5 месяцев назад
In the middle of the 1950s, America fell in love with Rock Hudson. Ranked the #1 box office draw in the country, Rock was an American ideal of masculinity - strong, confident, and above all, romantic. But the figure that America worshiped as the perfect man was really a façade propped up by years of scheming and betrayals. It was a secret that stayed hidden in plain sight for years… until a cri...
The Secret Life & Loves of Tab Hunter
Просмотров 722 тыс.6 месяцев назад
One of the biggest Hollywood heart throbs of the 1950s was discovered shoveling horse manure in a barn. His name was Tab Hunter, and he set the nation’s hearts aflame with his pretty face and even prettier body. Tab built a career playing a macho ladies’ man in picture after picture after picture ... But behind the farm-boy physique lurked a secret shadow - one that a sleazy tabloid and unscrup...
Psycho's Norman Bates & the Hidden Life of Anthony Perkins
Просмотров 90 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Psycho’s Norman Bates: one of the most memorable movie characters in history. Brought to life by Anthony Perkins, Alfred Hitchcock, and a protégée of HP Lovecraft, Norman shocked audiences when he first appeared in 1960, and found an unexpected second life in sequels and TV series. And while Norman the character was known for his dark secrets, actor Tony Perkins carried secrets of his own from ...
Behind the Scenes of SOME LIKE IT HOT: Secrets, Scandals, and Marilyn's Mystique
Просмотров 533 тыс.8 месяцев назад
The American Film Institute called Some Like it Hot the greatest film comedy ever made. It's a tale of two musicians on the run from the mob, hiding out in an all-girl band ... and when it first hit theaters, audiences weren't ready. Coming at the tail end of the conservative 1950s, the movie made a mockery of uptight American attitudes about sex. But even more shocking than the movie's premise...
The Inside Story of All in the Family: The Rise, Fall, and Afterlife of the Bunkers
Просмотров 1 млн9 месяцев назад
All in the Family is one of the most controversial shows ever broadcast. It featured a typical American family, arguing over topics that most other shows didn’t dare go near, and shocked America as well as the network executives who tried to do everything they could to stop it. But while Archie, Edith, Mike, and Gloria were busy making TV history, behind-the-scenes feuds threatened to tear the ...
Norman Lear & The Power of Comedy: Behind the Most Shocking Shows of the '70s

Today, Norman Lear and his shows are famous - or infamous, depending on who you ask. But in 1971, he was an obscure TV writer and producer. A college dropout and former Nazi hunter, Norman turned to comedy after World War II. And after years of writing jokes for some of the most famous comics on television, Norman decided it was time to for a show of his own. He tackled topics that other shows ...

Ellen DeGeneres’ coming out episode was a massive TV milestone. The first openly gay lead character on a primetime sitcom, it opened the door for countless shows that followed. Jerry was a mediocre 80's comic and has remained so his entire career. He's now 40 years out of touch and angry that no one thinks he's funny anymore.
Could you do a video on John Inman? He played a fairly openly gay character in the UK in the 70s on a show called 'Are you being served'
That dress Marilyn wore! Oh la la! I love playing this gem for friends that have never seen it and watch their eyes pop! Guys and gals!
I believe he had a heart attack while driving ended up crashing.
Nerds change the world
I was a teen when this show was new. All my friends called my Dad, "Archie". LOL
I heard this line said a lot on the WWF/E and thought it came from there because I didn't watch Seinfeld until recently. Any time a wrestler would do something a little queer, a commentator would mention something about it and then they would say "Not that there's anything wrong with that".
This has to be one of your top stingers. That ACTING tho…
Amazing

Charles was @ his best in Match Game..
Whenever leadership looks to divert attention from failed policies or corruption, or anything that could be seen in a bad light, a scapegoat is needed to rile up the public. Same thing in Jim Crow Era, where rich white property owners set the poor whites and blacks against each other, about how black men were gonna steal your jobs and women. Here its how gay men were gonna corrupt your children and possibly infect even you! Anytime a group is singled out, be sure to check behind the curtain. When I think of my gay ancestors, my heart breaks for what they went through, and I realize any comfort I have now is because they suffered. Its very hard the keep the hate and bitterness tamped down.
I guess I prove your point because I’m straight as they come, and I never would’ve considered any of these characters “beloved “. They are all odious caricatures, to me. So perhaps you are onto something. here.
@ 7:00 the sugar daddies were LINED all the way up. channelin luigi in that pic.
Thanks Matt. I am 70 years old but I always learn so much history from you. Thank you for everything you do. I hate the way MAGA is trying to reverse all of our gains and I hope the truth tellers, like you, prevail. Good luck in all your future endeavors. I very much look forward to seeing them. BTW, the Stonewall riots were in 1969. I'm just sayin'. Still love you to Reeses Pieces.
Great source material!, Thank you Matt!
Can we stop saying England when we mean Britain?
I have loved watching Angela in everything I've seen her in, but wish you had metnioned her as Princess Gwendolyn in The Court Jester, with Danny Kaye, I would have loved to see an interview with her about that :)
What's interesting is that you get to the 70's and you have a show like Are You Being Served on BBC with a very out character Mr Humphries played by John Inman. Things can move/change fast once the ball gets rolling.....
Love you Matt.
This makes a lot of sense, honestly. Plus, let's be honest, Endora was pretty much a grand high drag queen....
Out of curiosity where were you able to find your research? I’m doing a school essay and it’s unbelievably difficult to find any information on this subject

Oh my. This was so well put together. You got teared up. :) (no sarcasm).
When this show just came out, I went to IMDB to read the reviews. Like always people would put a lot of time and effort in writing down their opinion. A few weeks back, I went there to find out when the second season is going to start. Found a lot more new reviews, but most of them were incredibly tedious and infuriating ... the same LGBTQ+ conspiracy bs. People are constantly b*tching about how there is nothing really good and innovative out there to watch, but then something truly brilliant like this show is coming along and they are trying to tear it down. We all are so lucky that more and more studios and producers are willing to invest in such risky projects. The reason why so many people disliked the 1994 movie is, because it depicted some of Hollywood's finest as GAY vampires ... that movie is a f*cking masterpiece, the special effects, the requisites, the acting - top notch, it deserved way more recognition. IMDB and so many others aren't just websites for fans by fans anymore, people care increasingly about the score on those pages ... that's why fans like us need to engage more actively (social media!) to help these kind of projects to succeed.
Mary Hartman show was a great
What the hell is wrong with you, dude??? To refer to Gay people as queer is an insult. Look at all the words the new gay community has been trying to impose on people! Well, it doesn't fly here and if you would try to impose that word on me, you'd get my fist on your face! Fuck off!
Never turned off the TV unless the power went out
Princess Diana really was all that and a bag of chips
can't we just have Garak and Bashir appear as older selves or an animted lower decks? PLEASEEEEE
Was his voice acting gay? No? Then who cares?
excelllent movie. Love it for all its aspects.
Sally Struthers was the daughter of my dad's commanding officer in WWII. Her dad delivered my older brother and sister. They remember Sally when she was a toddler and her older sister.
I hate to say it, but I don't believe a word Tony Curtis says.
I think the big problem is in 1993 so many straights caught absolutely none of the subtext so it would not be "coming out of the closet" but "there was a closet?" You would have to telegraph this much more and even then it It's just not the same as an interracial relationship which everyone understood as a subtext. Kirk is a man, Uhura is a woman, do the math. Everyone expected it even if some were churlish about it happening. But Garek/Bashir was still flying under their gaydar.
9:56 - glad to see Duckman referenced here.
💔😢
Ed Asner was so based
I just watched the Netflix series Hollywood and it's like supposed to be (partially) about Rock Hudson, but they really mangle it. They have him come out at the Oscars in 1948 with his boyfriend. Idk, it just made me mad I guess because there's already a powerful story to tell in Rock Hudson's life without pretending it was safe to be gay basically anywhere in 1948, let alone Hollywood.
Most Children: "I wanna be a firefighter/army man/ police officer/ president!" French kids: "J'aimerais être clown ou croque-mort!"
There's also the fact that they're *powerful* . Sure, they may have stereotypes, but they are taking those stereotypes and either *building armies* with them or becoming demigods
Wonderful essay! Thank you so much for this.
Cheers to Leslie Jordan from Chattanooga!
Very interesting! Charles was one of a kind!
They called him names because people are religious people not only are religious they come in the name of religion and then they call you names they come with divisional they come with hate and they come with judgement which is so sad and they call themselves Christians and they call their self part of face and then I have to come along and deal with reality and realism and let them know that love is
quite a few mistakes, especially about La Cage Aux Folles. Jerry Herman wrote the lyrics to "I Am What I Am". Harvey Fierstein wrote the book for the musical. Arthur Laurents was the director.
Interesting navy blue handkerchief worn on your right side. . .
the scene where tom describes the opera to denzel is truly a triumph of cinema and brings me to tears.
Thanks for the news flash!
Venus Xtravaganza died so young. Very sad she didn't got her desired future “I want to get married in church in white. I want to be a complete woman. I want to be a professional model behind cameras in the high fashion world,” she told Livingston".
